1958 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible
-The Super 88 could be ordered with the high-performance J-2 engine option, which featured three two-barrel carburetors.
-How it worked: For normal cruising, the car ran only on the center carburetor for fuel economy. However, when you “floored it,” the two outer carburetors would snap open, jumping the horsepower to a massive 312 hp.
-This setup was so powerful that it was eventually banned from NASCAR because it gave Oldsmobile and Pontiac (who used a similar system) an unfair advantage.
