1964 Ford Fairlane Custom
Drawing inspiration from Ford’s legendary 427 Thunderbolts that dominated NHRA Super Stock competition in 1964, this comprehensive custom reinterprets the factory drag racer concept with modern components.
The original Thunderbolts combined lightweight Fairlane 500 bodies with high-riser 427 engines assembled by Dearborn Steel Tubing, creating factory-backed quarter-mile machines.
This example substantially exceeds those specifications. A Jon Kaase-built 572-cubic-inch Boss Nine engine (based on the Boss 429 design introduced later in the decade) replaces the period-correct FE powerplant, delivering 145 additional cubic inches.
MSD electronic ignition, a QFT Dominator-style carburetor, serpentine belt drive, and coated three-inch exhaust with custom side exits modernize the drivetrain.
Fincher Fab’s custom chassis incorporates an integrated roll cage, Mustang II-style front suspension with rack-and-pinion steering, and four-link rear suspension. Double-adjustable Koni shocks control all four corners, while 13-inch Wilwood four-piston disc brakes provide stopping power.
A Hughes Performance 4L80E automatic transmission connects to a custom nine-inch rear end with 3.70 gears.
