Harley Earl’s styling department introduced sweeping pointed tailfins for the first time on Cadillac’s flagship convertible, replacing the earlier “fishtail” arrangement that had characterized the marque since 1948.

This distinctive rear treatment positioned the Eldorado apart from other Series 62 models, with tail, brake, and backup lights mounted at the base of each fin.

Full rear-wheel cutouts and Saber Spoke cast aluminum wheels (the industry’s first production cast aluminum wheels) further distinguished the model, along with ribbed chrome moldings below the side glass.

The 331 cubic inch overhead-valve V8 generated 270 horsepower through dual four-barrel carburetors (either Rochester 4GC or Carter units) topped by a gold-colored batwing air cleaner, producing 20 additional horsepower over the standard engine.

This high-performance setup later became optional across the Cadillac line. Power transferred through a four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.

Standard equipment included a signal-seeking AM radio with electrically operated antenna, heating system, E-Z-Eye tinted glass, power windows, six-way power seats, fog lamps, and special floor pads. Additional options encompassed remote trunk release and side-mounted spotlights.

With just 3,950 produced and a base price of about $6,286, the Eldorado represented Cadillac’s most expensive and exclusive offering for 1955.
