1947 Ford Super DeLuxe Sportsman Convertible
The 1947 Ford Super DeLuxe Sportsman Convertible stands as one of the most fascinating vehicles in Ford’s post-war lineup. Born from Henry Ford II’s desire for a stylish wood-bodied car, this distinctive model was designed by Bob Gregorie with input from illustrator Ross Cousins. Each Sportsman featured extraordinary woodwork constructed of premium maple, birch, and mahogany, with the maple pieces carved from solid wood.
Powered by Ford’s reliable 239 cubic inch flathead V8 engine producing 100 horsepower paired with a three-speed manual transmission, the Sportsman offered adequate performance for leisure driving. The luxurious interior featured genuine leather upholstery with French stitching, color-keyed carpet inserts, and the uncommon luxury of hydraulic power windows as standard equipment. Priced approximately $500 above the standard Super DeLuxe Convertible, Ford produced just 2,274 units during the 1947 model year. Though never intended as a volume seller, the Sportsman served its purpose as a showroom attraction, drawing customers to dealerships with its elegant design and premium features.
