Wallie was so tiny that she looked like a piece of white fluff on the dirt road, but when the woman stopped, she realized it was a kitten who had been left behind. Wallie’s eyes were crusted shut, her fur was dirty, and her body was so weak she barely moved, like she had already accepted the cold and loneliness.

Nearby, Wallie’s little sibling lay still in the dirt, and the sight shattered the woman’s heart into pieces. Wallie didn’t understand why she was alone, only that the world felt quiet, hungry, and terrifying.

But when Wallie was lifted into warm arms, she finally felt something she had never felt before, safety.
