1936 Lancia Astura Cabriolet Series III ‘Tipo Bocca’

Born during Italy’s technical renaissance, this model carries Lancia’s advanced engineering concepts, including an 82 horsepower narrow-angle V-8 engine and independent front suspension. The third-series Astura was produced in two wheelbase lengths: 908 “Lungo” models with a 131-inch wheelbase, and 328 “Corto” models with a 122-inch wheelbase. While technically brilliant, factory Asturas were criticized for conservative styling.

The solution came through a remarkable collaboration between the Bocca brothers, prominent Lancia dealers, and rising coachbuilder Battista “Pinin” Farina. The Bocca brothers commissioned a total of six cabriolets in both short and long chassis variants, all designed by Mario Revelli di Beaumont, who took full advantage of the narrow-angle V-8 to create a rakish yet restrained cabriolet design. These cars featured curved side windows, detailed body moldings, three-position split/dual fold-down windscreens, and a hydraulically actuated reclining top.
