Only 839 were built in what would be both the first and last year for this nameplate, making the 1958 convertible the rarest Buick sold in America that season. The Limited name returned after years of dormancy to denote Buick’s most expensive and lavishly equipped automobile, priced at $5,125 when many comparable Cadillacs sold for less.
A grille composed of 160 faceted chrome squares anchored the “Fashion-Aire Dynastar” styling, while distinctive hash marks adorned the rear fenders to set Limiteds apart from lesser series.
Spanning over 227 inches on a 127.5-inch wheelbase, this flagship rode eight inches longer than the Roadmaster. Power came from a 364 cubic inch overhead-valve V8 generating 300 horsepower, mated exclusively to the Flight Pitch Dynaflow transmission with three turbines and a variable-pitch stator.
The two-speed automatic provided exceptional refinement despite considerable hydraulic slippage. Production ceased after just one season as the 1958 recession devastated sales of Detroit’s most extravagant offerings.
