1972 Triumph 2500PI Estate Ferguson Formula 4X4
As the only one of its kind ever produced, the 1972 Triumph 2500PI Estate Ferguson Formula 4X4 combined the elegant Michelotti-styled bodywork of Triumph’s executive car with innovative four-wheel drive technology. Built on the Mark 2 platform introduced in 1969, it featured the powerful 2.5-liter straight-six engine with Lucas mechanical fuel injection, delivering 132 horsepower and impressive 120mph performance capability. The Ferguson Formula system—pioneered by tractor magnate Harry Ferguson—provided four-wheel drive traction uncommon in passenger vehicles of that era.
While standard 2500PI models faced reliability challenges that eventually led to their replacement with carbureted alternatives, this unique prototype showcased what might have been a practical solution for adverse weather driving conditions. The estate (wagon) body style added valuable cargo space to an already versatile package, making this one-off creation a perfect combination of performance, luxury, and functionality.
