1938 Mercedes-Benz 320 3.4-Litre Cabriolet B (by Sindelfingen)
German luxury touring at its finest, the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 320 3.4-Litre Cabriolet B represented elegance and engineering excellence during the pre-war era. Introduced in 1936 as a replacement for the 290 series, this sophisticated automobile featured a powerful six-cylinder sidevalve engine that evolved from 3,208cc to 3,405cc to compensate for lower quality fuel. This larger displacement pushed output to 78bhp, while coil-sprung independent suspension at all corners delivered exceptional comfort.
Though Mercedes was quiet about top speeds, models equipped with the optional ZF overdrive “autobahn” gear could reach approximately 80mph. Hydraulic brakes handled stopping duties for this nearly 2,000kg (4,400 lb) grand tourer. Among the various body styles, the two-door, four-window Cabriolet B stands as the most recognized variant, offering prestigious open-top motoring similar to the more expensive 500K models.
