1954 Buick Skylark
Factory customization gave this limited-production convertible its distinctive character, with cut-out front fenders revealing contrast-color inner wells that showcased Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels. Sculpted rear fenders bore large chrome tailfins housing the taillights, while unique trim included a special hood ornament and heat-pressed waffled upholstery. This 1954 continuation of Buick’s successful “dream car for the public” wore new flush-sided styling that departed from its 1953 predecessor.
Echoing the proto-muscle car Century formula of years past, the Skylark combined a smaller, lighter Century chassis with the larger Roadmaster powerplant for excellent performance. The 322 cubic inch V8 delivered 200 horsepower, justifying Buick’s Sport Convertible marketing designation.
With pricing that exceeded Cadillac’s Series 62 convertible, only 836 examples were built in this final year before the Skylark’s hiatus until 1961. This exclusivity has maintained strong collector demand since new.
