1957 Dodge Coronet D-500 Hardtop
Chrysler’s Forward Look philosophy transformed Dodge’s image in 1957, with Virgil Exner’s design featuring dramatically finned bodywork, sweeping curves, and wraparound windshields.
The Coronet hardtop coupe particularly benefited from this styling revolution, riding on a 122-inch wheelbase that emphasized the low, wide proportions distinctive to that model year.
The D-500 performance package elevated select Coronets above standard models with a specially tuned 325 CI Hemi V8.
In standard D-500 form, the engine used a single four-barrel carburetor, while the Super D-500 specification added dual four-barrel carburetors that raised output to 310 horsepower, along with mechanical lifters, a performance camshaft, and high compression.
Power was available through Chrysler’s advanced three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, distinguished by innovative pushbutton controls mounted on the instrument panel, or through a manual gearbox. This gave buyers flexibility depending on whether straight-line performance or street driving was the priority.
Combined D-500 and Super D-500 production is generally estimated at around 500 units across all 1957 Coronet body styles. That rarity stands in stark contrast to the 160,979 Coronets built for the 1957 model year.
