1953 Chrysler Special (by Ghia)

The 1953 Chrysler Special featured a powerful 331ci OHV Chrysler HEMI V8 engine generating 180bhp at 4,000rpm. This rare automobile, designed by Virgil Exner and built by Ghia coachbuilders, combined American power with European styling in a limited production run of just 18 cars. All were manufactured for the European market and featured either a Fluid Torque Drive four-speed semi-automatic transmission or a PowerFlite fully automatic unit.

Unlike typical concept cars of the era that were futuristic but impractical, the Special was fully engineered as a working automobile, representing Exner’s philosophy of creating “Idea Cars” that remained grounded in reality. With its high wheel arches, flowing lines, and distinctive trapezoidal grille, the Special continues to influence Chrysler designs to this day.
