1970 Ferrari Dino 246 GT ‘L-Series’ (by Scaglietti)

Following production of only 150 206 GTs, the more powerful and refined 246 GT model was introduced in March 1969. Separated across L, M, and E series (corresponding to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd), total 246 production reached 3,761 units over the next five years and included both coupe (GT) and spider (GTS) variants.

Handmade lightweight aluminum doors, hood, and trunk lid distinguish the earliest Dino 246 GT production from later examples. Readily identified by their center-lock knock-off wheels, and with only 357 produced, the L-Series cars are considered the rarest and most desirable of the three.

The L-Series retained numerous features from the 206 GT while benefiting from the larger 2.4-liter (2,418 cc) V6 engine. Early cars carried over several 206-derived interior and trim details, creating a clear link between the original 2.0-liter concept and the more developed 246 platform.

Later M-Series and E-Series Dino production incorporated changes including steel doors, hood, and trunk lid in place of the earlier aluminum panels, along with detail updates throughout the car. Curb weight for the 246 GT was approximately 2,380 pounds (about 1,080 kg), depending on specification.

The combination of 206-derived details with increased displacement created a brief production window that collectors recognize for its unique characteristics.
