Meet the 1976 Sebring-Vanguard CitiCar; a vehicle that looks like what would happen if you asked a cheese wedge to pretend it’s a car. Born during the 1970s oil crisis, this electric oddball was essentially what you’d get if you crossed a golf cart with a doorstop.
The brainchild of former Chrysler dealer Bob Beaumont, the CitiCar packed a “mighty” 6.5 horsepower electric motor and could reach a blistering top speed of 28 mph… downhill… with a tailwind. The car’s 35-mile range quickly shrank if you encountered such challenging conditions as hills, cold weather, or the driver having lunch.
Despite looking like a rejected prop from a low-budget sci-fi movie, the CitiCar was surprisingly successful for its time. With about 2,400 units sold before Sebring-Vanguard went bankrupt in 1978, and another 2,000 sold as “ComutaCars” by a different company, it was actually the second-best-selling electric car of the 20th century!
