1962 Renault Dauphine Gordini Deluxe
Performance-tuned by renowned engineer Amédée Gordini, the 1962 Renault Dauphine Gordini offered enhanced capability over the standard rear-engine French economy car. The Gordini version featured a specially modified 845cc four-cylinder engine producing 37 horsepower, an increase from the base model’s 32 horsepower. This performance upgrade came paired with a four-speed manual transmission.
Period road tests, including those by Road & Track, reported a top speed close to 80 mph and a 0-60 acceleration time in the low 20-second range. The car featured distinctive styling elements such as chrome side moldings and Gordini badging on the rear engine cover. For 1962, Renault updated the Dauphine with new front turn signals similar to those used on the Floride model. While standard Dauphine production ended in the early 1960s to make way for the Renault 8, the Gordini variant continued production until December 1967, making it one of the longest-running performance variants in Renault’s lineup during this period.
