1964 Volkswagen Type 3 Panel Squareback
Panel van versions of the Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback rank among the rarest variants in the air-cooled VW family, with an estimated production run generally believed to be well under 1,000 units and only a small number of known survivors.
Built in limited numbers in Australia from CKD kits, the panel van deleted the rear side windows (replaced by solid panels), fitted a bulkhead directly behind the front seats, and lined the cargo area with protective panels and wood flooring suited to commercial use.
A single sun visor and clock delete panel reflected its work-oriented purpose.
Underneath sat the Type 3’s 94.5-inch wheelbase platform, distinct from the Beetle and featuring a wider track and different floorpan, while still carrying Volkswagen’s air-cooled, rear-mounted flat-four engine and rear-wheel drive layout.
For 1964, the 1500N produced approximately 45 horsepower (SAE) through a single carburetor, while the twin-carb 1500S was rated at about 54 horsepower. Drum brakes served all four corners (front discs became available on the Type 3 beginning in 1966).
Like all Type 3s, the engine’s low-profile “pancake” configuration beneath the rear cargo floor allowed usable luggage space in both the front trunk and the rear compartment.
