Feeding Stray Cats for Three Years
My husband and I have been feeding stray cats for three years now.Together, we receive a little over 6,000 dollar in monthly pensions, and nearly 4,000 of that goes toward the cats.If it weren’t for our children helping us out, we wouldn’t even have enough for groceries.
Right now, we’re caring for eleven cats at home—all with some kind of disability. If we were to let them back on the streets, I’m afraid they wouldn’t survive on their own.
As for the healthy ones, we can only care for them outside, making sure to feed them regularly.Just seeing them well-fed and warm enough to sleep peacefully makes us happy.
A lot of people don’t understand us.They say we’re foolish—that we should be enjoying our money instead of “wasting” it on cats. “Are those cats going to support you when you’re old?” they ask.To them, we’re just a couple with more money than sense, unwilling to enjoy an easy retirement.
We’ve heard it so often that we’ve learned to ignore it.People can say what they want—everyone’s entitled to their opinion.
What matters is that we find meaning in what we do.Those who criticize don’t understand the joy these cats bring us.Every time one of them runs toward me and rubs its head against my leg, my heart feels full. That kind of emotional reward is something no amount of money can buy.
Seeing them happy and safe brings us peace. In the end, isn’t life about doing what you feel is meaningful?
