1955 Bentley R-Type Continental Sports Saloon (by Franay)

Introduced as a high-performance variant of the standard R-Type, the Bentley R-Type Continental captured attention with its impressive 192 km/h (119 mph) top speed, making it the fastest four-seat production car of its time.

Under the hood, the R-Type Continental featured a powerful 4,887 cc OHV inline six-cylinder engine generating 178 bhp, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Engineers transformed the standard R-Type through strategic modifications: enhanced carburetion for increased power, optimized gear ratios, and dramatically reduced weight—over 225 kilograms (496 lbs) lighter than the standard model.

The Continental’s development included rigorous testing at France’s L’autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry, where it demonstrated its exceptional performance capabilities. With its combination of refined handling, substantial power, and luxurious accommodations, the R-Type Continental established itself as an iconic grand touring automobile of the early 1950s.
