1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T

The Challenger arrived for 1970 as an all-new E-body platform, and Dodge wasted no time putting the 426 Hemi into it.

At 425 horsepower from dual four-barrel carburetors, the Hemi R/T hardtop was among the most aggressive configurations available in the pony car segment that year (just 287 hardtops were produced), and it remains one of the rarest muscle cars of the era.

Buyers who wanted the full package could option the A34 Super Track Pak, which bundled a heavy-duty A833 four-speed manual transmission with a 4.10-geared Dana 60 Sure Grip differential, heavy-duty cooling, and power front disc brakes.

Ordering the Hemi automatically added suspension and driveline upgrades as well. A color-matched Shaker hood scoop (coded N96), drawing air directly to the carburetors, was optional on Hemi cars and part of the visual drama.

Interior appointments on R/T models included bucket seats and the Rallye instrument cluster, with the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter fitted to four-speed cars.

On the outside, Chrysler’s High-Impact color palette (shades like Plum Crazy, Go Mango, and Sublime) made the Challenger R/T visually unmistakable on the street, a deliberate contrast to the more conservative offerings from Ford and GM that year.
