The returned ginger cat watched its owner leave, on the verge of tears.
The adopter was a teacher. She had gone through a screening process and seemed like a great fit in every way. She had been taking good care of the cat too. The reason she gave for returning the cat was that the ginger was too energetic and had scratched her son and her students. I can understand that—it’s hard to explain scratches on students when you’re running a class.
But later, I found out she had adopted a very handsome Ragdoll cat from somewhere else.
In animal rescue work, the hardest part is often the follow-up.
When the owner put the ginger cat down and walked away, the little cat stretched its head out, looking after her.
At that moment, I almost cried. It’s not being overly sentimental—I just couldn’t bear to look into its eyes.
