On my day off, I got a call from the hospital in the afternoon.
A patient was suspected of having a difficult birth—should they take the case?
After five seconds of thought, I said, “Yes, I’m on my way. Please have Dr. Cai sign the consent form, prep the OR, place an IV, and shave the surgical site. Draw up the anesthesia too—I’ll start the procedure as soon as I arrive.”
Worried about evening traffic on the highway, I decided to take my motorcycle for easier maneuvering. I sped through and soon reached the hospital.
C-sections always test a team’s capabilities. I needed to focus on delivering the kittens and managing the mother cat, while another team cared for the newborns. Kittens without a heartbeat or breath needed immediate resuscitation.
During the surgery, I kept asking my assistants for updates:
“Any heartbeat? Any breathing?”
I instructed them to suction fluids and even perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the unresponsive kittens—all while my hands were busy tying off blood vessels.
Finally, when the assistant reported that even the weakest kitten was breathing on its own, I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders.
The mother cat woke up, and all five kittens were alive.
I felt deeply relieved—and proud of my team.
Bringing life into the world is always a beautiful thing.
Together, we are saving lives!
