1952 Alfa Romeo 1900 M ‘Matta’ (AR51)
Italy created its own answer to the ubiquitous Willys Jeep with this rugged reconnaissance vehicle, producing just 154 examples for civilian use while delivering approximately 2,007 to military and police forces.
Nicknamed “Matta” (meaning “Mad Alfa”), this utilitarian off-roader proved its capabilities by winning the 1952 Mille Miglia in the Military Vehicle category, defeating competing Fiat Campagnolas by 42 minutes.
The AR51 designation stood for “Autovettura da Ricognizione” rather than Alfa Romeo, reflecting its military reconnaissance purpose. Giuseppe Busso’s design team studied a Land Rover as their starting point, incorporating independent front suspension with transverse torsion bars and a rigid rear axle with leaf springs.
Power came from a 65-horsepower, 1,884cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The torpedo-shaped body could accommodate a canvas top for weather protection, while the entire vehicle weighed just 2,755 pounds (1,250 kg).
Production ran from 1951 to 1954, when the design evolved into the AR52 variant.
