1976 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ

Among the most visually distinctive years of the 1973-77 Grand Prix generation, the 1976 model received a new split vertical-bar “waterfall” grille flanked by quad rectangular headlights, along with revised taillight lenses (giving it a sharper, more formal appearance than its predecessors).

The Grand Prix rode on a 116-inch wheelbase and shared GM’s A-body platform with the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, all positioned in the midsize personal luxury coupe segment. Fixed opera windows and 5-mph impact bumpers front and rear reflected the federal safety mandates of the period.

The SJ trim added a standard 400 ci four-barrel V8 rated at 185 horsepower (net), a rally gauge cluster, Radial Tuned Suspension with front and rear sway bars, Pliacell shock absorbers, and steel-belted radial tires. Leather bucket seats with a center console were available as a factory option on SJ models.

Total Grand Prix production for 1976 reached approximately 230,000 units, with the SJ representing a significant portion of that total.
