Its name, “Islero,” honored the legendary bull linked to the demise of Spain’s renowned matador, ‘Manolete.’ Beneath the low-slung bonnet, Lamborghini’s 4.0-liter V12, carried from the 400 GT, initially produced 320bhp, later upgraded to 350bhp in the Islero S version introduced in 1969, featuring flared wheel arches, vented front wings, and an improved interior.
The car’s development involved some of Italy’s finest engineers, with Mario Marazzi leading the design team to create elegantly understated coachwork. The chassis featured a wider track than its predecessors to accommodate larger tires, while performance proved exceptional – the Islero S could reach 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and achieve a maximum speed of 157 mph.
With only 225 total units produced between 1968 and 1969, including just 100 S models, the Islero represents one of Lamborghini’s most exclusive early front-engined creations.
