When Donut arrived for what was meant to be a routine spay surgery, nobody imagined it would change her life forever.
The two-year-old cat had just been transferred to Ten Lives Club near Buffalo, New York, from the Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS) on April 4th, 2025.
She was finally safe, cared for, and about to be spayed, a step that would help her health and prevent more kittens from ending up homeless.
But as she lay sedated, the veterinary team spotted something that stopped them in their tracks.
It wasn’t part of the planned procedure. It was her eyes.

During a careful examination, they discovered that Donut was completely blind in her left eye and had only minimal vision in her right.
Even more concerning, both eyes were filled with excess fluid, causing high pressure that made them bulge and turn a cloudy blue.
The condition was painful, and without treatment, her already limited sight would vanish completely.
The vets soon had an answer.

Donut had Aqueous Misdirection, also known as Closed Angle Glaucoma, an extremely rare ocular disease in cats.
There was no cure, no medication to reverse it, and only one possible treatment to end her pain: enucleation, the complete removal of both eyes.
According to the Veterinary Information Network, Aqueous Misdirection is most often seen in middle-aged cats, with an average onset around 11 years old, and occurs more often in females.
Both eyes are usually affected, though not always equally.
The cause remains unknown, and research on the condition is still limited.
Over time, it leads to progressive, blinding glaucoma, making early detection critical.
Though sadly, even early diagnosis doesn’t change the outcome.

For Donut, the decision was heartbreaking but clear.
Keeping her eyes would mean keeping her in constant pain.
Removing them would mean giving her a chance at a comfortable, happy life.
The surgery went ahead, and Donut handled it like a champion.
Recovery for a cat without sight might sound daunting, but blind cats adapt faster than most people expect.
They rely on their hearing, smell, and memory to navigate their environment.
Once they map out their home, they can climb, play, and explore just like any other cat as long as their humans avoid moving the furniture too often.

In Donut’s case, the difference after surgery was almost immediate. The pain was gone.
She began exploring her surroundings, using her whiskers and sense of smell to guide her. Her confidence grew every day.
The staff at Ten Lives Club quickly learned that Donut had a big personality to match her resilience.
She loves curling up on a warm heating pad, perching proudly on top of the office chair, and “talking” to anyone who will listen.
She’s a chatty girl who makes her presence known, and her affectionate nature has made her a favorite among the team.

For now, Donut is still in recovery.
Her stitches will be removed after a final veterinary check, and once she’s fully healed, she’ll be ready for adoption.
Whoever takes her home will get a stunning, sweet, and incredibly strong cat, one who has already proved that life without eyes can still be full of joy.
Her story is a reminder of why rescue work and veterinary care are so vital.
A stray or surrendered cat getting a routine procedure might also receive a lifesaving diagnosis, just as Donut did.
For many cats, those moments on the vet’s table are the first and only chance they have for a thorough health check.

Donut’s days of struggling in silence are over.
