Shaggy Cat Was Rescued From The Streets But Turned Out To Have More Than A Dozen Diseases

If you spend enough time helping stray cats, you know that every trap brings a surprise.

For the TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) team with the Lowell TNR Coalition, one particular rescue turned out to be unforgettable.

A few years ago, they came across a cat who was in desperate need of help.

His fur was a tangled mess of mats and dirt, the kind of coat that told a story of long, hard months on the streets.

They managed to trap him and bring him to safety, transferring him to the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society (MRFRS) in Salisbury, Massachusetts.

That’s when they finally got a good look at him and realized just how bad things had become.

This senior boy, later named Frisbee, was estimated to be around 10 years old.

His fur was so severely matted that it was considered the worst the shelter staff had ever seen.

He was hungry, exhausted, and clearly had been fending for himself for a long time.

No one could say where he came from, but the thought that he might have been abandoned by a family was heartbreaking.

The rescue team didn’t hesitate.

They sedated Frisbee and spent hours carefully shaving away the mats and tangles.

When he woke up, the heavy, dirty coat was gone. He could finally move comfortably again.

And as if to say “thank you,” Frisbee began purring almost immediately.

It’s incredible what a good meal and a fresh start can do.

But the shave revealed more than just clean fur; it revealed serious health problems.

Frisbee’s mouth was in terrible shape.

Half of his teeth were missing, and the rest were so damaged that they all had to be removed.

He was diagnosed with stomatitis, a painful and chronic inflammation of the mouth, meaning he would need lifelong medication.

As if that wasn’t enough, he also tested positive for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus).

Many shelters still mistakenly view FIV as a death sentence, but MRFRS knew better.

With the right care, Frisbee could live a long, happy life.

And they were determined to give him that chance.

For months, Frisbee remained in their care, getting the medical treatment and attention he needed.

Slowly but surely, his health and confidence returned.

Then came the day his forever home appeared.

Donna Atkins was browsing adoption sites when Frisbee’s photo stopped her in her tracks.

There was something about his face that told her she had to meet him.

She didn’t think twice about making the 1.5-hour drive to Salisbury.

When she arrived, it was love at first sight. On July 7, 2017, Frisbee, now renamed Buffy Boy, left the shelter for good.

Donna already had another cat named Baby Cat, and the shelter had described Frisbee as an “alpha cat.”

The two hit it off, and Buffy Boy settled in quickly.

From a neglected, matted stray, he transformed into a pampered house cat with a warm bed, good food, and a family who adored him.

Donna shared her gratitude with the shelter, thanking them for everything they did to give Buffy Boy a second chance.

She even made a donation in his name, wanting to help other animals who couldn’t speak for themselves.

Years later, Buffy Boy’s coat is full, soft, and well-kept.

He and Baby Cat are still living the good life together, enjoying all the comforts he was once denied.

The MRFRS team loves receiving updates from former rescues like him, because those success stories are what keep them going.

Frisbee’s journey is proof that with the right care and compassion, even the most neglected animals can flourish.

And sometimes, all it takes is one person deciding they are worth the effort.
