He would wait until everyone went home.
Quilty, a domestic tabby cat at Friends for Life Animal Rescue in Houston, learned a skill that most cats never bother with. He figured out door handles.
At the shelter, cats live in shared rooms instead of individual cages. Quilty lived in the senior cat room. Every night after staff left, he’d leap up, twist the handle, and swing the door wide open.
Then he’d let all his roommates out.
Staff would arrive each morning to find cats roaming freely throughout the facility. They’d have to round them up and herd them back into the room. It happened again and again.
Security footage confirmed Quilty was the culprit. He’d jump on the handle, pull it down, and push the door open with ease.
They tried makeshift locks. Quilty outsmarted them.
Eventually, they installed a child safety lock. That finally stopped him. But by then, his reputation had gone viral.
Quilty had been adopted from the same shelter as a kitten years earlier. When his owner moved, he was returned. He’d tasted freedom once, and he wasn’t interested in being confined again.
The internet fell in love with him. His story brought donations flooding into the shelter. Within weeks, he was adopted into a new home where he could use his skills for good, or at least for couch naps.
Quilty never apologized. He didn’t need to. He knew exactly what he was doing.
