He was trapped behind locked doors, pacing in tight circles like his little heart was shattered.

Inside the Williamsburg bus depot, a young gray cat named Metrocard cried out all night, confused and scared, as if he was begging the world to notice him. His sad meows bounced off the cold walls while the city stayed bright outside without him.

A volunteer stood on the other side of the glass, whispering softly, trying to calm him, but Metrocard could not understand why safe arms would not reach him.

He was so hungry that when food was slid under the door, he swallowed it fast like a baby who feared it might be taken away.

They taped a sign pleading with workers not to let him out. Then they left him there and prayed he would survive until morning.
