Supercharged German grand touring cars reached extraordinary levels of performance and luxury during the late 1930s, combining advanced engineering with coachbuilt elegance. The Cabriolet A featured flowing fenders extending from front to rear, dual spare wheels mounted at the rounded tail, and a distinctive setback radiator configuration.

Known as Fahrgestell mit zurückgesetztem Motor (chassis with setback motor), this layout positioned the radiator and engine approximately 7.3 inches farther rearward than standard.

The result was an especially long hood and dramatic proportions, and only 32 examples of the second-series Cabriolet A received this treatment from Sindelfingen’s roughly 1,500-person coachbuilding operation.

Introduced at the October 1936 Paris Motor Show, the 540 K succeeded the 500 K with an enlarged 329.6-cubic-inch straight-eight producing 115 horsepower in naturally aspirated form. A driver-operated Roots-type supercharger engaged at full throttle, increasing output to about 180 horsepower at 3,500 RPM.

Twin pressurized downdraft carburetors and sodium-cooled exhaust valves reflected competition-derived engineering. The chassis featured independent front suspension with coil springs and a rear De Dion axle with coil springs, along with hydraulic brakes assisted by a vacuum servo.

Chassis options included 117-inch, 129-inch, and 153-inch wheelbases to accommodate a wide range of factory and custom body styles. Production totaled 419 chassis through 1940, with eleven standard factory bodies offered alongside bespoke coachwork.

Top speed approached 110 mph, placing the 540 K among the fastest and most exclusive road cars of its era.
