1963 Maserati 5000 GT
The 1963 Maserati 5000 GT stands as one of the most exclusive grand touring automobiles of the post-war period. Born from a request by the Shah of Iran, this extraordinary vehicle combined the chassis of the 3500 GT with a modified version of the potent five-liter V-8 engine developed for the 450S racing car. Producing 340 horsepower, the sophisticated DOHC V-8 was refined for road use with Lucas mechanical fuel injection replacing Weber carburetors.
Eight different prestigious coachbuilders created custom bodies for these vehicles, resulting in varied and distinctive designs. With a price nearly double that of the already expensive 3500 GT, the 5000 GT appealed only to the world’s most affluent buyers, with just 34 examples produced between 1959 and 1961.
