1957 Mercury Voyager 2-Door Station Wagon

Pillarless hardtop construction distinguished Mercury’s entire 1957 station wagon lineup from conventional wagons, with the two-door Voyager representing the industry’s only production example of a two-door hardtop wagon.

Chrome trim, wraparound quarter panel windows, and quad headlights characterized the exterior styling. The rear window retracted electrically into the tailgate, which folded flat against the cargo floor.

Two-door models accommodated six passengers only, as the forward-facing third-row seat configuration available in four-door versions would have made rear access impractical.

The standard 312 cubic inch V-8 produced 255 horsepower, with an optional 368 cubic inch Turnpike Cruiser V-8 delivering 290 horsepower. A three-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission was available alongside a manual transmission.

Mercury positioned the Voyager between the base Commuter and top-tier Colony Park in its three-tier wagon hierarchy. Production of 2,283 two-door examples reflected modest buyer interest in the unconventional body style.

The model returned for 1958 with revised front-end styling incorporating better-integrated quad headlights, though the experiment with two-door hardtop wagons concluded after 1959 when Mercury returned to conventional four-door station wagon construction.
