1910 American Underslung Traveler Toy Tonneau

A chassis that ran beneath the axles rather than above them gave this Indianapolis-built automobile its distinctive low-slung proportions and exceptional handling characteristics.

Designed by Fred Tone and produced from 1907 to 1914, the American Underslung (a factory-bestowed nickname rather than an official model name) combined slinky styling with the performance of powerful T-head four-cylinder engines.

These expensive automobiles represented top-tier American performance during a period when Indianapolis competed with Detroit as a motor car manufacturing hub.

The four-passenger Traveler featured Toy Tonneau coachwork with close-coupled lines and a compact rear seat for two, tucked behind the front occupants. Dual rear-mounted spare wheels added to the dramatic appearance.

Underneath the 122-inch wheelbase chassis sat a 499.2 cubic inch T-head inline four-cylinder engine producing 50 bhp, connected to a three-speed manual transmission. Semi-elliptical leaf-spring suspension at both ends and rear-wheel expanding drum brakes completed the specification.
