When staff at Lake County Animal Shelter in Florida welcomed a new rescue through their doors, no one could have guessed the story this little tabby was carrying with her.
She was quiet. Calm. And clearly a survivor.
Volunteers quickly gave her a name: Petunia.
She had arrived with a litter of kittens after being rescued off the streets by a kind stranger.
Petunia looked like she had seen her share of hard days, but no one knew just how much until the vets took a closer look.

At first, they thought the scarring on her face was due to a cleft palate. But that theory didn’t hold up.
The truth that eventually came to light was far more disturbing.
Petunia had actually been shot in the face as a kitten.
Her former owners had mistaken her for a rat and pulled the trigger. The bullet tore through the left side of her face, damaging her upper lip and nostril.
She survived the ordeal, somehow, but it left her permanently disfigured.

Her face healed in a way that made her look a little different, enough that people might walk past her in a shelter without giving her a second glance.
But not everyone did.
Emily Blythe, a volunteer at the shelter, met Petunia not long after she arrived.
Emily had offered to foster her, not knowing she’d be walking into one of the most rewarding relationships of her life.
“She just needed somewhere to land,” Emily said. “She was sweet and so easy to care for, despite everything she’d been through.”

It wasn’t an easy start. Petunia had trouble breathing.
She struggled to eat properly and could only manage food from one side of her mouth.
The skin around her chin was overly sensitive, and touching it would make her wince.
But she never lashed out. Never hid. She just tried to keep going.
Emily and her family slowly began making adjustments for her. They monitored her food. They kept an eye on her breathing.
They visited the vet twice a year. It wasn’t long before they realised they didn’t just want to foster Petunia.
They wanted to keep her.

By the time Emily signed the adoption papers, Petunia had already claimed her place in the house.
She spent hours curled up in her favourite bean bag chair, often found in the exact same spot day or night.
Her appearance may have looked unusual to others, but for the Blythe family, she was perfect.
“She’s the most loving cat I’ve ever known,” Emily said.
“She loves to rub her face against yours, and she’s obsessed with cuddles.”

Even visitors who were taken aback by her face quickly warmed up to her.
She had a way of leaning into affection that was hard to ignore. She purred loudly. She followed people around. She seemed to want nothing more than to be close.
Her only challenge? The stream of foster kittens that occasionally filled the house.
Emily, who continued working with the shelter, often brought rescues home for short-term care.
Petunia wasn’t always thrilled with the company, but she tolerated them.

Perhaps she saw something familiar in their eyes, the uncertainty, the fear, the hope.
“Animals like Petunia get overlooked all the time,” Emily said.
“Too old, too sick, not pretty enough. But they’re the ones with the most love to give.”
Petunia, now several years into her new life, continues to thrive.
The trauma she endured as a kitten didn’t define her, it shaped her into something stronger. Something softer, too.

Emily calls her “perfectly imperfect,” a phrase she uses often when talking about the animals that come through her door. And in Petunia’s case, it fits perfectly.
She may have been mistaken for something else. She may have been hurt and scarred and passed over more than once.
But today, she’s part of a family that sees her for exactly who she is.
“She has gone through so much in her short life,” Emily said.
“But she still loves fearlessly. She’s just a happy cat. And we love her so.”
