Vignale designed a sleek four-seat fastback coupe positioned between Maserati’s sporting Ghibli and larger Mexico, offering a higher roofline for improved rear passenger headroom while maintaining sporting proportions.

Unveiled at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show, the model honored Maserati’s consecutive Indianapolis 500 victories in 1939 and 1940. The design featured pop-up headlights, a large rear trunk lid for luggage access, and steel unibody construction.

Power came from a 252 CI (4136 cc) all-aluminum 90-degree V8 with dual overhead camshafts producing 260 hp at 5,500 rpm, fed by four Weber carburetors. A ZF five-speed manual gearbox came standard, with a three-speed Borg-Warner automatic optional.

Maserati built approximately 440 examples with the 4.2-liter engine before introducing larger 4.7-liter and 4.9-liter versions. Total Indy production through 1975 reached about 1,100 units.
