1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible
A groundbreaking addition to Chevrolet’s lineup arrived in 1958 with the Impala Convertible, which featured an all-new, single-year bodyshell shared with Pontiac. This full-size model sat on a low X-member frame with four-wheel coil suspension, replacing the traditional leaf springs of earlier models. The Impala established itself as the premium offering in Chevrolet’s range, stretching nine inches longer and five inches lower than its predecessors.
Inside, drivers found a competition-inspired steering wheel and color-coordinated door panels with brushed aluminum accents. The potent 348 cubic inch V-8 “Tri-Power” configuration with three two-barrel carburetors generated 280 horsepower, making it a standout option during the escalating power competition of the late 1950s. Despite selling 55,800 convertible units and helping Chevrolet reclaim sales leadership with 29.5% market share, this distinctive design lasted just one model year.
