1923 Star Model C Touring

After being ousted from General Motors for the second time, Billy Durant established Durant Motors in 1921 and created the Star brand specifically to challenge Ford’s dominant Model T in the low-price market. Star became the first American car company to offer a factory-built station wagon in 1923, rather than shipping chassis to custom builders.

Like other Durant Motors products, the Star was an “assembled car” built from components supplied by various outside companies. Continental supplied the engines, with Durant becoming Continental’s biggest customer, taking up to 85% of their output.

The Model C featured a 130.4-cubic-inch L-head Continental four-cylinder engine producing 33 horsepower, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Star production ran from 1922 to 1928, with total output reaching 358,689 vehicles before Durant’s financial overextension forced the company’s closure.
