He once had a home, soft places to sleep, and a person he trusted with his whole heart. Now Otto, a fragile senior cat, lay curled on a cold apartment stair, trying to make himself small enough to disappear. His tired eyes watched feet pass by, hoping one pair would finally stop.

He did not understand why the door of love had closed forever. Hunger twisted his belly, and fear followed every sound in the hallway. Still, this gentle soul did not hiss or run. He only waited quietly, as if believing someone might remember he mattered.

Old, confused, and alone, Otto’s sweet heart was breaking in silence, right there on those hard steps.
