1975 Ford Ranchero GT

The sixth-generation design emerged from Ford’s 1972 Torino-based intermediate platform revision, adopting larger body-on-frame construction that replaced the previous generation’s more compact proportions.

Federal safety regulations mandated a redesigned front end for 1973 incorporating 5‑mph impact bumpers, while 1975 brought catalytic converters and related emissions hardware to meet tightening emissions standards.

The GT package emphasized performance-oriented trim rather than a single fixed appearance. Exterior details varied by year and build, and items such as side stripes or a blacked-out grille were not exclusive to all GT models and could differ depending on options or regional production.

The 6’6″ cargo bed offered payload capacity in roughly the 1,200‑pound range, supported by a coil‑spring rear suspension with trailing links on the Torino-derived chassis.

Standard equipment on many 1975 Ranchero GTs included a 351 cubic‑inch V8, while buyers could specify either a 400 or 460 cubic‑inch V8, all with reduced compression ratios compared to earlier performance‑oriented years.

A C6 three‑speed automatic transmission was the most commonly fitted gearbox, channeling power to the rear wheels. Front disc brakes and power steering were widely available and, by the mid‑1970s, were effectively standard or near‑universal equipment on V8 Ranchero GTs.

Ford produced approximately 508,000 Rancheros across all generations from 1957 through 1979. The coupe utility format integrated passenger car comfort with pickup truck functionality, built on passenger car and station wagon–based platforms throughout its production run, including intermediate‑size underpinnings during its later years.
