Ah, the BMW Isetta – the bubble car that proved Germans can have a sense of humor. This charming little oddball from 1955 might be the only car in history where you enter through the refrigerator door. Correct… the entire front of the car swings open, steering wheel and all, like you’re about to grab a midnight snack.
Powered by a tiny 247cc motorcycle engine (later upgraded to a “massive” 297cc), the Isetta was BMW’s creative solution for post-war mobility. While most cars ask “how many cup holders do you need?” the Isetta asked “how many people can we fit in something the size of a washing machine?”
The answer: two very close friends and maybe a sandwich.
Despite its quirky design (or perhaps because of it), the Isetta was a hit. Its most popular accessory was a luggage rack, since interior storage consisted of whatever you could stuff in your pockets. With a top speed of about 65 mph in the larger engine version, it wasn’t exactly a speed demon, but it did prove that good things come in small, egg-shaped packages!
