For as long as anyone in the neighborhood could remember, Luciano had made the streets his home. Yet, every day, he showed up outside one particular building, waiting.
Why? Because that building housed his favorite human—a young girl who had taken it upon herself to brighten his difficult days.

Together with her mom, the girl showered Luciano with love, food, and head scratches. In return, Luciano offered his trust and affection, a rare gift from a stray cat.

Determined to give him a better life, the family turned to the power of the Internet, posting Luciano’s story on Facebook. That post caught the eye of Gissell, the founder of Paws of Hope NYC, who quickly stepped in.
She suspected Luciano might once have been a beloved pet, abandoned and left to fend for himself—a heartbreaking reality for many cats in the city.
