1964 Citroën 2CV 4×4 ‘Sahara’
The 1958 Citroën 2CV 4×4 ‘Sahara’ marked a significant departure from the standard 2CV design. While retaining the model’s fundamental simplicity, this variant innovatively incorporated TWO engines – one in front and one in rear – each powering its respective axle to achieve four-wheel-drive capability. Developed for use in French colonies, particularly North Africa, this unique configuration allowed the typically modest 2CV to tackle challenging terrain.
The ‘Sahara’ variant demonstrated how Citroën’s engineers could adapt their basic economical car design into a capable off-road vehicle while maintaining the 2CV’s characteristic simplicity and serviceability.
