1931 Bugatti Type 55 Two-Seat Supersport
Essentially a road-legal Grand Prix car with bodywork, this spectacular sports car represented the first design by Jean Bugatti and became one of the most coveted automobiles ever created.
Introduced at the 1931 Paris Motor Show, the Type 55 was produced from 1932 to 1935 as a road-going version of the successful Type 51 Grand Prix car. The supercharged 2.3-liter straight-eight engine produced 130 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, delivering remarkable performance for its era with 0-60 mph acceleration in under 13 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph.
Only 38 examples were built total, with 16 wearing factory roadster bodies designed by Jean Bugatti and 7 featuring coupe bodywork. The majority of factory-bodied cars lacked doors, making them far less practical than those fitted with custom coachwork.
Originally priced at approximately $7,500, this specific Type 55 sold for over $5 million in 2020 while a 1932 example exceeded the $10 million mark.
