1953 Alfa Romeo 1900C Coupé

Alfa Romeo’s first all-new post-war design arrived in 1950, introducing unitary construction to the marque while maintaining its sporting character through a twin-overhead-camshaft engine.

Developed under Dr. Orazio Satta Puliga, the design employed wishbone and coil spring independent front suspension and a well-located live rear axle, engineering that earned the four-door sedan its “the family car that wins races” reputation.

The 1900C (Corto, meaning short chassis) Sprint appeared in 1951, with Carrozzeria Touring’s coupé bodywork establishing an influential design language. The heart-shaped Alfa grille flanked by horizontal intakes became a lasting Alfa Romeo trademark.

Touring’s Superleggera construction kept weight to approximately 2,200 pounds (about 1,000 kg) while providing family-sized accommodation in a two-door sports coupé format.

The 1,884-cc inline four-cylinder engine produced approximately 100 horsepower in Sprint specification, similar to the output of the 1900 TI sports sedan.

Touring built three series through 1954, when the model evolved into the 1900C Super Sprint with a 1,975-cc engine rated at approximately 115 horsepower and a five-speed gearbox. Production of the 1900 series continued through 1959.
