1969 Buick GS 400 Stage 1

With understated looks masking impressive power, the Buick GS 400 Stage 1 embodied Buick’s “Fast with Class” philosophy better than almost anything else in the lineup.

This performance package transformed the standard GS into a true quarter-mile hero, adding a hotter camshaft, functional ram-air induction, 10.25:1 compression ratio, revised cylinder heads, and upgraded valve springs.

While officially rated at just 345-350 horsepower (only 5-10 more than the standard GS 400), the Stage 1 was significantly underrated to keep insurance costs manageable.

In reality, the engine delivered closer to 390-400 horsepower. The 400ci V8 produced an impressive 440 lb-ft of torque, channeled through either a Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic or four-speed manual transmission.

Performance was exceptional, with Car Life magazine recording 0-60 mph times of 6.1 seconds and a quarter-mile run of 14.5 seconds at just over 100 mph.

Of the 19,257 Buick GS muscle cars produced in 1969, only 1,466 received the Stage 1 treatment, with 832 featuring automatics and 415 equipped with four-speeds.
