1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster

At just 1,427 units built (fewer than 2% of total Thunderbird production that year), the Sports Roadster was far and away the rarest configuration available in the 1962 T-Bird lineup.

The package transformed the four-seat convertible into a de facto two-seater through the addition of a fiberglass tonneau cover that sealed off the rear seat without interfering with the power convertible top.

Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels with knock-off spinners, special front fender badges, and a color-keyed passenger grab bar on the dashboard rounded out the package.

Power came exclusively from Ford’s 390 ci V-8, either in standard 300-horsepower form with a single four-barrel carburetor or as the rare “M-code” variant using three two-barrel carburetors to produce 340 horsepower. All Sports Roadsters left the factory with the Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission.

The tonneau package carried over for 1963, though only 455 were produced that year, cementing the 1962 as the more plentiful of the two.
