1912 Chalmers-Detroit Model Thirty Touring

Chalmers-Detroit carved out a distinctive position in the early American automobile market, pricing its cars in the $1,500 to $3,000 range and attracting buyers from prominent families including the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers.

The Model Thirty Touring represents that ambitious period, when namesake Hugh Chalmers steered the company toward performance and quality over volume.

The open Touring coachwork follows the elegant long-hood proportions typical of brass-era construction, with period-correct bodywork that rewards careful inspection.

Power comes from a 226 cubic inch inline four-cylinder producing 30 horsepower, sent through a 3-speed manual transmission. Leaf spring suspension and mechanical rear drum brakes were standard for the time.

By late 1908, the company had been officially renamed Chalmers Motor Car Company, and the marque continued climbing in popularity, eventually producing about 21,000 cars annually by 1916.
