1959 Ford Galaxie Sunliner

Ford’s stylists borrowed the formal roofline from the Thunderbird and applied it to the 1959 Galaxie, the new top-trim series introduced mid-model year above the Fairlane 500. The move paid off: the design earned a Gold Medal for Exceptional Styling from a judges’ panel at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair.

The Sunliner was the sole open-air conventional convertible in the Galaxie series (the retractable-hardtop Skyliner remained in the Fairlane 500 line), and 45,327 found buyers at a base price of $2,957.

Galaxie trim added Thunderbird-inspired C-pillar treatment to closed models, while all variants wore a double-runner chrome side strip with a gold anodized insert above the Fairlane 500 scripts.

Standard power came from Ford’s 292 CI overhead-valve V-8 rated at 200 hp, backed by a choice of manual or automatic transmission.

Optional engines included the 332 CI rated at 225 hp and the 352 CI, which could be ordered in ratings up to 300 hp for buyers wanting more performance. Power steering and brakes were available across the range.
