1954 Hudson Italia

Representing a daring vision in American automotive design, the 1954 Hudson Italia emerged as a stunning European-American hybrid intended to boost the company’s fortunes.

Hudson designer Frank Spring collaborated with Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring to create what began as the “Super Jet” prototype in 1953, featuring distinctive elements like doors cut into the roof, deep air scoops in the front fenders, and jet-inspired exhaust outlets integrated into the rear bumper guards.

The production model retained most of these dramatic styling cues when it debuted in early 1954. Built on the compact Hudson Jet platform, the Italia combined American mechanicals with hand-built Italian aluminum bodywork.

The futuristic interior offered ergonomic bucket seats long before they became common in American cars, while the wraparound windshield provided exceptional visibility. Power came from Hudson’s 202 cubic inch inline-six, and the car rode on a 105-inch wheelbase.

This striking vehicle unfortunately arrived at precisely the wrong moment, coinciding with Hudson’s merger with Nash to form American Motors Corporation.

The new management discontinued the project after just 26 examples were produced, making it among the rarest postwar American automobiles and certainly the most exotic vehicle to ever wear the Hudson badge.
