1956 Ferrari 250 GT Alloy Coupe (by Boano)
Among the rarest and most desirable early production Ferraris, the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Alloy Coupe represents a pivotal moment in the marque’s evolution from bespoke racers to proper road cars. Only 14 examples were built with lightweight aluminum alloy bodywork by Carrozzeria Boano, making them exceptionally scarce among the estimated 68-80 total “low roof” coupes produced. These alloy-bodied variants featured dramatically reduced weight that enhanced the performance of Ferrari’s 229-horsepower, 3.0-liter “Columbo” V-12 engine, creating particularly nimble competition machines.
The Boano coachwork faithfully replicated Pinin Farina’s elegant design with one notable modification: smoothing out the aggressive rear wheel haunch to create a stronger, lower beltline. These alloy coupes proved their racing credentials with significant victories at the 1956 Alpine GT and 1957 Acropolis Rally. The 250 GT marked Ferrari’s first true production model, establishing the foundation for all future 250-series cars while maintaining the exclusivity and performance that defined the brand. Today, these alloy-bodied Boano coupes are among the most coveted early Ferraris.
