Developed in Cologne for European touring car competition, the Capri RS2600 took the fastback body of Ford’s 1968 Capri (itself conceived as a European counterpart to the American Mustang) and transformed it into a serious racing machine.

The production RS2600 was left-hand drive only, based on Ford of Germany’s top-spec 2600GT.

It used a 2,637cc V6 with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, rated at 150 PS (about 148 hp) in street trim, while the Weslake-developed racing version was enlarged to 2,995cc, fitted with fuel injection and dry sump lubrication, and produced around 300 bhp in full competition specification.

Lightweight panels and competition prep reduced body weight on the race cars, and a ZF five-speed gearbox was available on the production RS2600 (with many road cars delivered with a four-speed).

In 1972, works driver Jochen Mass took the European Touring Car Championship. Fewer than 100 RS2600s are believed to exist today.
